Statement Of Intent
What research do you intend to carry out based on this theme?
In order to produce a successful, creative and individual final main project, firstly I need to research and write about 2 famous photographs so I can develop my photography using ideas from others. I am also going to make a Coggle mind map. This will be useful to me because then I can have all of my ideas set in one place and then I can develop from it in further photography lessons. I am going to look in some magazines and research on you tube some photography artists incase I wanted to use some inspiration from my research. Finally, I am going to use the 'Instagram' app which I already have on my phone because it is a good app when looking for different designs, photography and aesthetics so I think it will really help boost my project.
What techniques with the camera and photoshop am I going to use to develop my theme?
Throughout my project I intend to use as many processes and techniques as possible to gain a high quality project. The camera techniques I will use to create an Effect image for this project are: Aperture, WB, Shutter speed, ISO, Exposure, Rule of thirds. When I use my camera I will use manual settings to change and correct the settings based on the light and area I am in.I will also use a wide variety of photoshop tools to refine my taken image and perfect any imperfections I had when I took the image. I hope to explore lots of different options so that I build up intricate understanding of my chosen theme. I need to have a wide range of research using a variety of different media, to ensure that my project is well informed and in-depth. This will allow me to create a successful project and will help inspire me/ influence me My main aim is create a project that is very personal to me and one where I can explore and develop my photography techniques and skills I am going to use my weebly personal photography website to record all of my ideas.
What photoshoots do you intend to complete during the project to help explore the chosen topic?
I intend to capture a wide range of different shoots for this project. In year 10 we went to Salford and focused on capturing the natural landscape, focusing on the autumn colors and soft light Studio shoots that explores texture in the landscape (bark, moss, litchen, Go to my local area and document the landscape around me.
What I hope to learn from doing this project
From this project I hope to learn the theme of landscape but also how to take my work on a journey and create a personal and meaningful project. In order to do this im going to have to learn to work independently and get the right shots in the right locations and right techniques to create a clean and effective final gallery and I will focus on learning higher and more advanced skills on photoshop to create a very high quality professional images. I want my final gallery to show my journey from the start of my photography to the end of my GCSE path and how my work ethic and mentality to the projects has come along with me as well as my skill.
Research
In this image I can see that the photographer has used the ‘Rule of Thirds’, because there are 2 trees in the left hand side that sit in the ‘sweet spot’ . This technique makes the viewer look at that part of the image. In my opinion, I think that the trees really stand out against the grass because he has cropped the picture so that we have a better view of the tree and it makes the picture look more appealing and lively.
I can also see a small amount of sky in the top left hand corner which helps to frame the image. It helps to make sense of the photograph.
The photograph has a tight crop, this makes you look at the swirling grass in front of you which makes me think of autumn and makes the viewer have an idea of how beautiful the season is by looking at this picture.
For me, when I look at this picture I feel there is a strong leading line from the bottom right hand side to the top left hand side which is created by the swirling grass
The composure of this picture is good and isn't over composed
In this image, I can see a foreground, middleground and a distance. The grass is right in front of the picture plane, you have 2 trees in the midground and right in the distance there is a hint of the sky. This creates an impact because you get a sense of scale, there is also a depth of field and I think the photographer would have set their camera to an Fstop of about 36 as you can clearly see everything in focus.
So when I look at this image I can clearly see that the photographer has used the natural sunlight and they have managed to capture the way the sun dances on the surface of the grass, glows natural lighting and reflects off highlights of sun
The golden light on the grass acts as a contrast to the dark, almost black of the upright tree trunks and so adds real interest to the photograph
In my opinion, I think the photographer has set their camera on auto ISO or 100/200
White balance, auto or set on cloudy/sun
I think the aperture is set quite deep as we can see the background clearly, so F27-F36
Looking at the image I can see that everything is in sharp focus and so I think the shutter was fast as there is no blur. They may have used a tripod when taking the photo so that they could keep the camera steady and get the sharp image they wanted
I really like this image because I like the way the photographer has captured the moving golden grass and I think it will inspire to take my own images around the theme of Texture. Although I can see that the image has been taken well, I really like it. That is because I am keen on the subject matter as It has excellent lighting , texture and composure, the picture shows beautiful grass and nature and is nicely cropped to show the lively blue sky.

Roe Ethridge
Picture name: C'est pas du luxe
Context:
From my research I believe that the image was printed in 2012. It was published in his book Le Luxe which contained his works from the past ten years. From my research I believe that the photographer may draw some inspiration from Matisse as he named two of his paintings Le Luxe. As well as this, his narrative “offers an uneasy balance to the fissures between analogue and digital and Ethridge's consistent undermining of his own certainties” (source: https://photobookstore.co.uk/products/le-luxe). In his book, there is a range of images, including personal images, online work and commissions, it is a retrospective of his work from that decade.
Content:
The photographer has taken a still life image of two apples with six wasps eating them. It is realistic rather than abstract and none of the components have been distorted. The title of the image is C’est Pas Du Luxe which is a French phrase that means ‘to be to have too much, so much that it is wasted’. Knowing the title of the image can then change the implications of it as you can then see that it implies that we as humans could tend to have too much and therefore a lot goes to waste. I believe that the work represents people's tendencies to take more than they need of things and therefore as a species we tend to waste a lot. The work seems to communicate that while the wasps could eat both of the apples, if they ate them both they’d most likely die so therefore some of the apple will have to go to waste and like I said above I believe it shows how that is also done a lot by people.
Composition:
He utilized the rule of even and odd in this image by using only even numbers in the image which in my opinion is used to make the apples seem unnatural and then the fact the wasps have so many apples would also seem unnatural to the viewer as it can appear unbalanced. Also, the wasps in proportion to the apples makes the apples seem even more daunting and big, making the implication of greed seem even clearer to the viewer. The apples seem even more daunting as there is pieces near by that have been chopped up yet the apples still seem huge compared to the wasps. As well as that, the table makes it split on the horizontal, cutting the image well. In my opinion, the image has a central focal point as my eyes were immediately drawn to the apples in the centre. In this image, Ethridge also clearly used a studio light as the shadows would be a lot less bold in comparison to if he had used natural light and the same with the colours, the colours would seem a lot more diffused if natural light had been used. I believe this image has used the rule of thirds as the two apples (more the one in the background) line up with the grid for the rule of thirds. The background is out of focus, meaning the photographer most likely used a small depth of field therefore I believe the image may be around an f/stop of f/2. I also believe he may have used a shutter speed of 1/2000 as he was able to capture insects without the image becoming blurred. In the image the colours red and green have been used next to each other, they’re contrasting colours and that draws your eyes to the apple in the image and highlights it as the subject rather than allowing your attention to be drawn to the background. I believe Ethridge may have used a tripod to capture the image given how close it appears to be to the subjects.
Connection:
This connects to of our photoshoots as one of the main subjects is an apple and our photoshoot was of different kinds of fruits and vegetables. As well as this, some of the compositional elements we used were the same as in our shoot: I tried my best to use the rule of even, experimenting with how many of the subjects were in the shot and seeing what’d look more natural. Following my research, I quite like the image, as well as how well you can tell more of the implications of it once you know the title but before that it's up to your own interpretation. I also like how you can link the message to modern day life because as a species humans tend to bite off more than they can chew and therefore waste a lot. I really like the way the image conveys a message, because not all photography has to have a message, some can be just pure aestheticism, however, this one does have a message and I hope to take photos with messages and meanings behind them too.

Imogen Cunninghamn
Composition
The light on the image is like the focal point of the image since the background is black. This gives us a monochrome type of image. Light source is from the front of the photograph lighting up the flowers. This is so that a darker contrast is based on the image and makes the photography very dramatic ,this is so that a darker contrast is based on the image and makes it seem very powerful. Rule of Thirds sweet spots, is in the bottom left hand corner on a grid, the eye is drawn into the centre of the flower. In the foreground is a flower that catches the eye of the person looking at the image because the background is black so the flower stands out In this image the photographer has not used a very deep depth of field as i cannot see much of the middle and background. The image of the flower has been cropped tightly so the flower looks very close to the picture frame. The image has curved and spiral lines created by the petals and leaves of the plant, down into the centre of the flower, leading your eye again into the centre. In my opinion, I think this image is a Studio shot composed carefully using studio lighting, tripod for the camera. The Contrast brings out a big difference between the black of the background and the white of the flower, which Brings out the form and shape of the flower.
Connection
I have decided to look at a range of photographers . I am particular interested in researching photographers who have done black and white images. I am looking at the work of Imogen Cunningham because she has a unique photography style focused on plants and black and white images. I like how she takes images of different plants and how she does black and white images, I like how she uses rule of thirds and how she crops the images. I will use all these different ideas to inspire my own photography.
Comment
In my opinion I really like her work because the contrast and the shade in her photography makes the images stand out she also has a unique style of taking pictures like cropping the images and the rule of thirds this also another reason I like her photography. she uses a shallow depths of field which is really good.
Plan for photo shoot:
For my photo shoot, I am taking inspiration from Imogen cunning photography. I am going to take photos of natural things such as flowers, leaves and all different plants. I would need to position my camera at the correct angle and I will make the background out of focus to make the picture much more in detail , sharp and focused. I will do my shoots outside and use a camera and natural light. I want to use a dark backdrop so the full focus goes to the flower and all the small details can be seen. For my camera settings I will need to change my ISO quite low around 100-400 because outside the lighting changes. However, If I want a fast shutter speed I will increase my ISO to around 400-800. The items I will need are flowers/plants, light (either natural light or using indoor lights).

Shoot plan
Project Title/ shoot number:
Texture shoot 1
Description of aims for shoot:
In this shoot I am aiming to capture the natural texture of various fruits and vegetables, I am hoping to capture the natural colours as well, possibly slicing them and experimenting with the arrangements of the subjects.
Links with Photographers:
In this shoot, I am aiming to imitate Andy Small and capture the natural colours of the fruits and vegetables, hopefully using a contrasting background similarly to Small. As well as this I’m also aiming to take photos in the style of Roe Ethridge with the apples and an out of focus background. I am also hoping to take photos similarly to Imogen Cunningham with the use of a spotlight and a plain or out of focus background, manipulating them later into black and white.
Location: Studio shoot.
Props/ items needed:Tripod, spotlight to imitate Ethridge and Cunningham, black and white backgrounds, coloured backdrops to imitate Small, blue tack, camera and a battery.
Kit needed: Corn on the cob, pomegranate, apples, pepper, mushroom, tomatoes, cabbage, grapefruit and a lightbox.
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop : As I want the backdrop to be more out of focus then I will try to use different F-stops between F-stop 2 and 5.6.
White Balance: As the shoot is indoors, I will use either daylight, tungsten or fluorescent depending on the light at the time
Shutter speed: For shutter speed, unless I intend to use a tripod,I believe 1/125 would be best.
ISO: I am aiming to keep this low (100-200) as I want my images in focus without too much noise in the photo.
Which compositional rules will I use?
As I’m imitating Roe Ethridge and Imogen Cunningham I’ll aim to experiment with even and odd numbers of subjects as well as possibly single subjects similar to Andy Small. I will also try to use symmetry and possibly triangles.
For my project on ‘Texture’, my starting point is looking at a range of different textures, both man made and natural Texture. I am going to start by taking photographs of natural textures such as flowers, leaves, and nature. To help inspire me I am going to look at 1 photographers who focus on texture in their work and try to do it like them which is Roe Etheridge because they take pictures of fruit n veg.
I am also developing ideas by looking at different pictures off leaves.
I am going to use a range of different cameras and equipment so that I can explore/develop my photography skills. In school we use Canon DSLR cameras so that we learn to use the manual settings. Before we take a photograph we have to put the strap on(WB,ISO, Exposure etc) The reason we do this is because we are learning the skills of taking photos and being able to control the picture and stabilize the camera. My own phone camera is good quality too and has great focusing skills. For my next shoot I am going to focus on taking a set of images based on natural textures. I will use the natural daylight if taking photos outside, however, I might experiment with shining a camera torch onto an object so that I can get a better effect. By taking photographs from the environment around me, In my back garden and maybe the park and around school. I hope to extend my picture base so that I have more to experiment with in Photoshop. I will also get images that are unique to me and so my work will become more personal

Natural Texture
My Images Are Taken To Show Texture
Pepper
In my opinion I feel as though this is one off the worst images I have taken. The reason why I feel like his is because the focus off the camera is terrible and you cannot really see the object too well and it looks pretty cloudy too. This imagine i taken was the first ever time I put my hands on a camera and clearly I wasn't really experienced with what I had to do. I didn't really use any rules and didn't set the ips or paid any attention to the depth off field. I also recall not standing still for this image, instead I should've tried to change my posture and focused more.
When you compare the two images you can see a massive difference in the two, the yellow pepper is really focused and zoomed in on. You can almost see the detail off everything on the yellow pepper, the pictures colour pops out so much making it very lively and almost satisfying to look at. The depth off this imagine is also pleasing and isn't too zoomed in. The background is also blurred to make the main part off this image (the yellow pepper) pop a lot more and making it look bigger and clear. Overall this image is extremely professional and detailed considering it was one off the first 10 pictures i had taken with a camera.
|
Lettuce
I feel as though this is the best image I have taken for the lettuce as the colors really pop out from the lettuce and the depth off this image is also amazing, especially with the lettuces in the back, they create a massive impact upon this image. Creating foreshadowing upon the image is brilliant.
Unfortunately for this image it wasn't really focused upon and you cannot concentrate up on the lettuce as the depth off this image isn't the best. It was the first image I had taken off the lettuce and I definitely improved after I took a few more.
|
Sweetcorn
Best and Worst Sweetcorn
In my opinion this is one off the better pictures I have taken off the sweetcorn since it has a lot off clear and particular detail, the side off the picture is blurry and makes the main part off the image more focused on. The leading lines on the sweetcorn creates a really big impact on the image and it almost creates a tree effect.
I feel as though this is my worst picture as there's not really a main point to the image and nothing is really focused on. I feel like there could've been a lot off potential with this image too as the shadow below the sweetcorn would've created an amazing effect
|
Pomegranate
Best Pomegranate Picture
I've chosen this image as the best image for this fruit that I have taken since I've focused a lot on the fruit and created a really nice effect as a put one of the fruits on top off the other fruit to create a shadow reflecting off one another. The seeds in this image pop out a lot and look extremely juicy and detailed. The outskirts off the fruit are also extremely detailed, I purposely made the top right off the fruit blurry so that you can see the details of the fruit a lot more as you are slowly going down and made the salient point the centre off the image with the most characteristics. Worst Pomegranate Picture
The picture off the pomegranate at the bottom in my opinion is one off the worst pictures I had taken off this fruit since the fruit is not really popping and looks quite dull, dark and uninteresting. The shadow i tried to create isn't there and didn't create much off an impact as the image above. |
Mushrooms
Tangerine
Best and Worse
In my opinion I believe that the image on the right is the best picture I taken as it has no background and it is very bright clear and colorful and the exposure is just perfect. The image on the right however is focused but the background is showing and there is water there which ruins it.
Lettuce
Best and Worse
The image on the left is definitely better as it has a nice background and looks like a beautiful scenery , the center off the image is focused upon and surrounding is blurred. the image on the right isn't even horizontally presented and isn't even focused upon, you can also see the background which isnt presentable.
Cauliflower
Best and Worse
The image on the left has more element to it and a lot more detail than the image on the right, the image eon the right also is very plain and doesn't have any focus or context, you can also see the background slightly.
Kiwi
Best and Worse
The image on the left is a very good image as you can clearly see every little detail off the kiwi and can see all the hair sand sees, the way i placed it out too makes it look really good with the white background shining through the kiwi, the kiwi in the background also make it look like there's a lot more, where as the image on the the right is a good image however it isn't focused much and the image doesn't have anything to focus on as all the kiwi are just placed out on one another.
Onion
Best and Worse
The image off the onion on the right is one off my favorites as it has a beautiful pattern on the onion to the point where a person wouldn't even be able to tell that is an onion. I focused it purposefully from the front and made it blur towards the end to have a main focus point. I personally do not like the image on the left as it is a bit blurry and doesnt have a main focus point .
Pineapple
Best and Worse
I like the image on the left off the pineapple because it creates a shadow on the left off it giving it a darkness effect creating a bit off a meaning towards it. The ISO was set perfectly to create this along with the lighting too. I also really like the image on the right as its a picture from the top off the pineapple which makes it look completely different and pops out more, however I put it as my worst image as you cannot really see much detail on it and there's no effects.
Snow shoot
Best And Worse
The Image on the left is the worst image I taken as its not even focused and the ISO level was not set whereas the image on the right has very clear detail and looks alot better and you can see every detail off the snow.
Best And Worse
The image on the left is definitely the worst as there's literally no focus and no topic to look at whereas the image on the right is very detailed and the colored leaves have a very big effect on the image with snow covering it.
Best And Worse
The image on the left is a picture I don't like as it has no context and its literally off the floor and it doesn't look nice whereas the image on the right has branches and has the sky as the background which is effective because the image only has two colors which is brown (the branches) and different shades off white.
Best And Worse
I like both images however I like the image on the right a lot more as its a frozen spider web which shows a bit off a meaning behind it whereas the image on the left is just snow on a metal gate with no meaning however the picture on the left is still very nice as it has the snow in the background.
Best And Worse
I don't like both images too much however I prefer the one on the right a lot more as its as if someone has just abandoned the ropes and left them there from the net which brings a meaning to it where as the image on the left is just plain and not really meaningful again.
Best And Worse
The image on the right is very clear and you can see the imprint off every step off someone's shoe almost like telling someone that they were here, and it creates a dramatic effect with the astro turf covering it up a little. Where as the image on the left is still very nice it just doesn't have any meaning or effect behind it but the quality off it is outstanding.
Man-Made Texture
Shoot 4
I really like this image I've taken as the image has extremely bright colors which reflect off the camera, I used the rule off thirds and the exposure is brilliant in this image and it is also focused on. The Fstop is also really good as the background was blurred out on purpose and the white balance was set perfectly for this and creates and effective image.
However on the other hand I feel as though I could've potentially done lot better on this image and created a beautiful scenery with the strings coming off and the shadow being in place, the focus on the image isn't the best too and the exposure is overexposed and not good at all.
Cars
I chose those two pictures of the front lights off the car since I feel like it has a beautiful effect and reflects off the bulbs, the background is also blurred and the lights are focused on, it really shows the true beauty off the car and makes it seem lively. The reason I chose a picture off the concrete and car through the gate is, since its not really focused and doesn't have any effects, or exposure. The picture above the concrete did not turn out as I wanted to since it didn't adapt to the prevailing level of light and become able to see clearly.
Concrete
In my opinion I feel as though this image I have taken is very creative accurate, and precise in terms off features this image contains. The image reflects off the water which shows the long branched tree which has no leaves on it which demonstrates this image was taken in autumn. The image also shows a reflection of a person standing in the shadows which a few leaves surrounding him which is effective as a viewers POV.
The image below is definitely one off my worst as it doesn't really have a point or any point to it. Its just concrete which has no meaning or detail behind it, it has no focusing on anything and isn't clear whatsoever, but I slowly improved my ideas as I went on.

Best And Worse
I really like the image on the left which I took as you can see the building clearly though the gates which I purposefully made the camera blur it out, you can also see the beautiful blue sky which is very visible and is the only thing in frame behind the building which creates a meaningful effect. I didn't like the image on the right as its not really meaningful or isn't really interesting and is just a picture off the floor tiles.
Developing my Images In Photopea
In this image it was originally very pale and the yellow was really boring and dry, so I increased the brightness added a little shadow as a effect which made a big impact, I also adjusted the vibrance and leveled it up just abit to create that effective shadow.
I developed this image as I increased the brightness and colour and added flare as some sort off sun which is shining a cast upon the car, I feel as though I did a great job on this The Hue/saturation was worked perfectly on this and had a big effect on the image.
Final Ideas Plan
For my final ideas and plan I want it to be about the beauty of nature and leaves and green and pink flowers, I also want to make it so the pictures are very close up and nicely detailed making the iso perfect. I would be using tunsen light from the white balance settings on light to make it seem like the pictures were taken in a show room. I want to also really try to blur the background and make it so the flower/leave is really clear and zoomed in on. I will take these images outdoor in the sunlight or rain to make it a very nice scenery which gives it a beautiful effect for the image. I will take around 6 pictures for each plant to make a nice mood board.
I wanna have multiple off the same images so it matches perfectly and has a good look, I will edit these in Photoshop and edit the colors and make cool patterns with it. I will edit these to make black and white images along with colorful and vibrant colors.

Flowers
The image on my left Is In my opinion is definitely my best image I have ever taken, the whole image is just perfect in every way. Starting off with the background, its just perfectly blurred and the plant is amazingly focused on. The ISO is good too. The best thing about this image is the green bug sitting on the green leaf which is not that noticeable, but that is what makes it amazing. The image on the right couldve been better as it was from such a good angle however it just wasnt focused on and was very blury.
Developing my ideas
I went from having one clean image to copy and pasting it 4 times and fllipping each image to make it come into the middle , then pasting the whole image again 4 times which made the last image on the right which looks amazing. Mirroring the image.
Dandelion
The Image on the left is my best image as the scenory and quality off it is just amazing, not only that, the dandelion itself was perfect for the image as the feathers are exploding out I put the ISO at the perfect level for this image and it looks amazing, however the image on the right is not the best, I didn't focus it too well, and the flower itself is also dead and has no feathers which is not presentable.
Developing My Ideas
Before and After Images off my black and white dandelion image, to do this I simply went on photoshop and changed the filter off the image to black and white. I think it looks amazing and it really brings out a good deeper meaning to the image.
It was very hard to decide which image was my best image because they were all very good and very detailed however i chose the one on the left as it focuses on one flower in the bushes and it blurs the other one when the one on the right isnt focused on one particular flower and is zoomed in on the whole bush and doesnt really have a specifc thing to look at.
Developing my ideas
To do this I put the image into photoshop and copy and pasted 4 times then flipped the images till they all came into the middle. It looked really good and I used this technique on majority texture images because I think it looks amazing.

Developing My Ideas
I increased the vibrance off the image and saturation and then copy and pasted image 4 times and flipped each image into the middle and made them mirror each other.

Evaluation
For my project theme I mainly focused upon natural textures such as flowers, plants and many other natural events. I think I done a great job choosing this topic as flowers and natural texture as they are just beautiful and make an amazing effect when it comes to editing later on in photoshop. I Explored different themes such as flowers texture and concrete and man made things. In this project I found that I found photoshopping was definitely the most interesting and useful for me in the way that I manipulated my images to improve them.
I also learned many new techniques, my main technique which I learnt was the skills off photoshopping which helped me massively. Such as kaleidoscope technique which was very effective. I would like to develop my black and white techniques and improve them to add shadows and other things to really make the black and white stand out. I researched Roe Ethridge and Imogen Cunningham and learnt many things from their amazing photography skills. As there work really stood out to me in the sense off how they took images and there close ups and edits on photoshop.
Imogen Cunningham really had a effect upon my photography skills, as you can see, the research I did upon him, he did black and white pictures and he influenced me to do the same as him. I enjoyed the kaleidoscope technique the most as it comes out amazingly and it really stunning when it is complete making a amazing pattern through the center off the image.
The most successful part off my project is most definitely the photoshop skills i had learnt coming along with the photography I did with different types off lenses. In my project I did not enjoy any problems, however i encountered difficulties which i evolved up and improved, problems is not the word for my improvements. I learnt from my mistakes by doing my researching and learning how to improve instead off constantly asking for help from other people. I independently done well for myself and advanced my work.
If II had done this project again I most definitely would have learned more techniques to advance my work nd make it a lot better such as fade away photoshops and not repeating the same image which the mirror technique and black and white, I would've advanced them even more and I wish I could do different techniques and look at tutorials of them. I feel as though my final images are good, but they are not perfect, I will try to learn more photoshops as it will look better with different outcomes.
